The joys of a non-sedentary life, part 2

I spend roughly 4 -5 hours a night working on the house.  I’m trying to take Wednesday nights off, and take all day Sunday off as well.  But other than that, most of my free time is spent fixing up the homestead.  Surprisingly, I don’t find this exhausting.  Sure, I’m tired at the end of the day, but I have far more emotional and physical energy after 12 hours at the house than I do after 8 hours at a desk.  Here’s my theory.  I think certain types activity actually create energy.  When I’m firing on all cylinders, emotional, physical, and mental - I end up with more energy than when I started.

Emotionally, I’m usually working on the house with friends and family.  I’m teaching my kids about home repair.  I’m planning and building our home - the home where we will raise our kids and host our friends.  Physically, I’m stretching and lifting - use fine and gross motor skills.  the blood is pumping, and I’m burning calories.  Mentally I’m problem solving, planning projects, and designing the interiorer space.  All of these things working together actually give me energy.

Sadly, the trend in work is to split the three aspects further and further apart.  Engineers do all of the mental parts of a job like planning and problem solving, guys on the line or driving the heavy equipment do all of the physical aspects of working, and Human Resources is there to handle the emotional aspects of a particular industry or job.

Granted, some division of the different aspects of work is necessary.  It’s just my opinion that the wholesale separation of the physical, mental, and emotional aspects of working is part of the reason so many people are unhappy in their jobs.
