MCH - Manifold Plumbing System

This is the new manifold plumbing system we’ve installed in the house.  Set up more like an electrical system, it’s designed to minimize the cold water flushed from the system when you want hot water.  They say you can save up to several thousand gallons of water per year by using this system, so we’ll see how it goes!

    hey

what’s the lifespan of those tubes? also, thanks for making home renovation/renewal/stewardship look a lot less daunting.

I’m curious about how that has worked out, particularly over the winter. Also, I wonder if you really save as much from flushing the pipes/tubes if you have two separate tubes from the manifold to the sink and shower in the same bathroom. Someone exits the shower and turns on the sink to brush their teeth, or whatever, and you flush the same length twice… or did you branch the tubing closer to the bathroom with only one home-run to the manifold?

Oh, and my mom directed me to your site… how’s it going Nathan?

Hey Kyle! Good to hear from you. It’s true that the manifold system doesn’t have the benefit of shower to sink hot water. It’s what’s called a home-run system, where each fixture comes all the way back to the basement. But the shower to sink scenario actually happens less frequently than, say, hot water at the kitchen sink, hot water to the washing machine, etc. Single use applications, you might say. In a traditional hot water set-up, each of those uses would have to flush a huge portion of the cold water in the pipes before hot water was available. At least in my experience, it’s proven to save a ton of water. Here’s a follow up post on our water bill

Some people do a mini-manifold at each bathroom like you suggested. But I like the idea of no joints inside the walls to worry about. And the tubing is so cheap it make sense there too.
